After Volunteering for two years, AmeriCorps Senior Volunteers have reported:

Alzheimer’s Association:  The Alzheimer's Association leads the way to end Alzheimer's and all other dementia — by accelerating global research, driving risk reduction and early detection, and maximizing quality care and support.

    •  deliver support and education, raise funds, and advocate for Alzheimer’s

​America Reads: An after-school tutoring program working to achieve grade-level proficiency in reading. 

    •  Tutoring first and second-grade students in an after-school reading program

Catholic Charities of Herkimer CountyHelps the most vulnerable in our communities, including people with developmental disabilities, pregnant and parenting teens, immigrants and refugees, the unemployed, victims of domestic violence, and the homeless.

  • Assist youth, seniors, and families in various special projects 

  • Providing program and clerical assistance to non-profits

Congregate Meal Nutrition Sites: Overseen by the Herkimer County Office for the Aging, this program provides healthy meals for seniors in a group setting to promote socialization.

      •  Assisting seniors at Four congregate meal sites

                London Towers Nutrition Site- Ilion, NY

                Mid-town Nutrition Site – Herkimer, NY

                Rockton Plaza Nutrition Site – Little Falls, NY

 

Ecumenical Food & Shelter Council: Supports the operation of the eight emergency feeding programs in

Herkimer county, to disseminate information and share best practices among programs, to monitor and evaluate the accomplishments and outcomes of emergency feeding programs.  The EF&S Council also advises and reviews the RSVP program in its relationship to meeting critical community needs and performance measures. 

     •  Serve on an advisory council

Food Sense Program: A food co-op program through the Food Bank of Central New York offering quality food at a reasonable price, with an estimated savings of up to $15 per unit over retail.  

     •  Assist the coordinator and other volunteers with signup and food distribution

 

Food Pantries: Eight emergency feeding programs in Herkimer County.  Supplied with food from the Food Bank of Central New York, the pantry distributes food and grocery products directly to those in need.

      •  Serving the needy at one of eight emergency food pantries

                Dolgeville Food Pantry: serves residents of Dolgeville and Oppenheim/ Lasselsville area

                Frankfort/Ilion Food Pantry: serves residents of Ilion, & Frankfort/Schuyler School Districts

                Kuyahoora Food Pantry: serves residents of West Canada Valley & Poland School Districts

                Little Falls Food Pantry: serves residents of Little Falls

                Salvation Army Food Pantry: serves residents of Herkimer and Mohawk

                St. Bartholomew’s Food Pantry: serves residents of St. Bartholomew’s Food Pantry old forge

                VanHornesville/Jordanville Food Pantry: serves residents of ODY School District, East Springfield,                  Springfield, and Jordanville

                West Winfield Food Pantry: serves residents of Mount Markham School District 

Herkimer County Office for the Aging: New York State Office for the Aging provides funding to the local Office for the Agings across New York State.

     •  Serve on advisory councils

 

Herkimer County Hunger Coalition: Works with Herkimer County food pantries to help guarantee that they provide ample, nutritious meals for at-risk residents.

     Assist in the organization of community programs

 

HIICAP: Provides clients with free, unbiased, and confidential information relating to Medicare, EPIC, Medigap, Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare part D, long-term care insurance, Medicaid, Patient Assistance Program, and other health insurance issues. Hope Ministries: A volunteer program designed to help the frail elderly remain independent in their communities by providing services such as shopping for and with a client, laundry, light housekeeping, friendly visiting, non-medical transportation, and meal preparation.  

   •  Visiting and assisting the frail elderly through Companion Outreach

Kateri's Thrift Store: Provides quality used clothing and household items to families and individuals regardless of income or geographic location. 

  • Receiving donations and serving clients at the thrift store

RIDE (Retired Individuals Driving Elderly): A volunteer-based program that provides transportation and companionship for older adults to their medical appointments. 

  • Providing transportation services to seniors for health-related appointments

  • Receiving calls and arranging transports for the RIDE program

WISE (Wellness Initiative for Senior Education): WISE is an evidence-based program that aims to help older adults increase their knowledge and awareness of issues related to their health and aging through interactive activities.
